Coding? Why should a child have to learn it?
Last week I was reading a great piece by Tim Bajarin on Why Schools Should Teach More Than Basic Coding. Coding is becoming increasingly taught to children in the UK and for me this is a brilliant step forward for our education system.
For those who are unaware, every piece of software you use, every internet page yo visit and every video game you play has been coded by someone in a programming language. I can completely understand why this may seem a bit dull to many people, but I believe that other skills can be learnt by coding other than how to make a computer programme.
A fundamental part of writing code is computational thinking. Basically, you can use logic and data analysis to solve problems. These skills are fantastic attributes to develop because they can be easily applied to almost any discipline such as science, maths, business etc. As well as this it encourages creativity and an understanding of how the technology they use on a daily basis works.
For these reasons, I believe that as important as learning maths and English are; coding must not be ignored as it brings a whole host of skills that may not necessarily e learnt from other subjects.
Closer to Home
Our Gravesend schools are running along nicely with weekend being really popular. We have however still availbity in some of our facilties, such as awesome dance/drama studio at NTC on Saturday mornings.
Many of our clubs are breaking up for Easter so it’s going to be really quiet for the next couple of weeks! With that said I hope everyone has a great Easter and gets lots of goodies to eat!
P.s Please follow us on twitter @schoolspluskent and keep up with what is going on in Gravesend!
