Like many people I have been following our nation taking on the world at the Olympics. We have seen some amazing performances from many of our sports people. One that stands out for me is the efforts shown by Jessica Ennis-Hill and more so by Katerina Johnson-Thompson. These two ladies have quite honestly wowed me over the last few days. The effort and determination that they have both shown is nothing short of remarkable.
This was highlighted the other day while I was watching both heptathletes competing in the high jump segment of their competition. Both athletes managed personal bests and far out performed most of their rivals. However, the real heroine of this story must be the young Katerina Johnson-Thompson. Who not only showed flawless sportsmanship to her closest rival, Belgian Nafissatou Thiam but, then also went on to win the high jump with a staggering jump of 1.98 meters. This happens to be a British record and to think this came from a young lady of only 23. That record that she now holds also includes athletes that specialise in the high jump, which makes her achievement even more impressive.
Of course neither athlete managed to bring home the gold. However, we should make sure that their achievements are recognised. Jessica did manage to bring home the silver, while Katerina finished sixth overall. These two ladies should be rewarded in my opinion, for their inspirational efforts. Not only for showing the world what the British are capable of in the sporting world but, for also showing that women’s sports are just as important and relevant as the men’s.
Of course the Olympics aren’t over yet and I’m sure there are going to be many more British athletes proving their worth, both male and female. With that said, I am sure that there are those coaches and officials who are already looking for the next big British talent. Who knows, maybe that’s you or someone you know. However, you’ll never know unless you get involved. It really is time for all of those budding sports people to step forward and prepare themselves for greatness.
Don’t forget, we here at Schools Plus have a lot of facilities to help you and your club to achieve that greatness I’ve mentioned.
