Are we living the dream?
So there are only a few days of competing left in the Olympics and we are currently siting on 50 medals in total. 19 Gold, 19 Silver and 12 Bronze. Are we able to gain anymore before the last whistle blows? Your guess is as good as mine.
However, it is important to state that does put us in second place for the medal table. As we have more Gold and Silver medals than China. Who have a total of one more medal than we do, overall. As it stands we currently have 2 more Gold and 4 more Silver medals than China. A lead I hope we are able to maintain if not better in the coming days. I wish all our athletes that are still competing, the best of luck.
Although we are beating China on the medal table we are a long way from the achievements of our American cousins. The United States of America currently have 86 medals, 28 Gold, 30 Silver and 28 Bronze. They really have dominated the Olympics so far this year. Unfortunately for us, it would appear that there strongest disciplines are also some of ours. Both we and USA have had some of our best performances in Gymnastics and Swimming. Were we do beat team USA is in Cycling and Rowing. In fact if we as a country did as well as our cycling team against the rest of the world, we would be considered the greatest superpower in existence.
Our cyclists managed to achieve 12 medals, 6 of which were Gold. That means that they managed to gain more Gold medals than any other country managed medals. A truly outstanding and bewildering accomplishment, which begs the question ‘do we underappreciate our cycling team?’ You have to admit, to call them world class is most certainly an understatement.
As the Olympics draw to a close, I find myself getting more excited about the Paralympics and the achievements that our athletes will be able to accomplish. And it’s for that reason why we should all get involved in sport. I think the Olympics and certainly the Paralympics, prove that anyone can get involved in a sport. So let’s stop procrastinating and get out there and get involved. We no longer have an excuse. There are so many facilities on your doorstep these days; it’s hard not to fall over them. I should know I manage the lettings at some of them.
