So, a lot of recent studies are showing that we are living longer. But, what are we doing about staying healthier? It’s all well and good living longer, however, I think we have to consider that this is in direct relation to better medical care. Yes, I know, even though we keep complaining about the state of the NHS, without it and its advancements or the years we wouldn’t living as long as we do. In fact I would even go as far as to say that the reason the NHS is as bad off as it appears to be, is because it is a victim of its own success.
That coupled with our over use of antibiotics worldwide, has left us with quite a quandary. Because now we are living longer thanks to our advances, both medical and industrial, we now find ourselves both on the cusp of longevity beyond the belief of our ancestors of only a few hundred years ago and that of self-assured destruction. And I’m not talking about the threat of war or nuclear attack, I’m talking about finding ourselves in a situation where infections and viruses that we once didn’t even give a second thought to, could become lethal.
So, with this quandary in mind we must start thinking about how we look at our health and I for one am well aware that I could do much better at keeping healthier. We know diet is important, personally one of my downfalls, and we know that exercise and staying active is vital to staying healthier in later life.
So why don’t we exercise more? Sure, there are the guys down the gym that make feel inadequate in the muscle department. However, keeping fit and active is not about seeing how much muscle mass you can support on your frame before it’s impossible to move. It’s about movement, cardio as the experts call it. Have you ever heard the expression ‘Life Is Movement’, it applies here too. It doesn’t matter if you’re walking the dog every day or playing football with the guys every week. It’s about making changes in our lives, so that we do something every day that can help us maintain our health.
We are quite lucky nowadays; it seems that if you are just willing to get off the couch or step away from the computer, you find something active to do. But, if you are still looking for inspiration, why not get in touch and I’ll let you know what’s happening in our school. And while you’re at it, why not think about walking to us or get that old bike out of storage and dust it off, we have parking spaces for bikes too.
