This weeks Blog is looking at the effort that’s put in by all the volunteers within sport and social clubs. We all like to think we do our bit, but you will come across people who go that extra mile or put in that extra hour, these people are the lifeblood of our clubs and societies.
I have known many people that will stand at the side of a pitch and moan about things but the special ones are the ones that are willing to actually do something about it. There are several football teams that use the facilities and their organisers are typical of the hard working volunteers that you get all round the country.
There’s a group of ladies that organise and run one club that has fourteen teams and they seem to be here every night and weekend, now that takes a huge commitment from the ladies for their time and willingness to do it. How do they get involved? Well it usually starts with their boyfriends, husbands or sons that turn out every week to play.
Then they end up washing kit or looking after the drinks for half-time and then they end up collecting the subscriptions and then it escalates to them running the whole thing. When it gets too much for one person others are roped in and eventually you have the off field team that deal with everything apart from the actual game or sport.
I have always admired these types of people and have been grateful to many of them throughout my life for helping out at the various football, cricket and social clubs that I have played for. Long live the volunteer, they are priceless.
