This week’s Blog is looking at all the different sports that I have taken part in. To be honest I think I must have been a dog in a former life, because if you throw a ball in front of me I will chase it!
Cricket has always been my favourite and I played for as many days as I possibly could and up to a reasonable standard , football took up winter Saturdays and Sundays, then there was golf (though I always found that to be a bit expensive). Tennis, squash, and badminton have featured at different times through my sporting life along with a couple of games of hockey and rugby. Now Hockey was always a mystery to me as I am left handed when it comes to stick/bat sports, is hockey the only sport where you cannot play left handed? Athletics, swimming, and basketball were part of my school sports activities, though I never really carried on with those after leaving school.
Until I started working at Schools Plus I had the feeling that many sports and pastimes were on the decline as far as participation is concerned, however, now I see many people both young and not so young still taking part in many activities using the brilliant facilities available at Dinnington H.S. We have even got ballroom dancing now, I must admit I once had a go at Salsa but found it too much like hard work without a ball to chase!!
I guess it’s all down to having the facilities, the people with the inclination and time to run the sports and then encouraging youngsters to take part. Hopefully with the likes of Schools Plus these activities will continue throughout the communities and this will help with the health and fitness of our population.
So, if you have a sport that you like and need somewhere to play it, have a look at our website and see if it’s available, if not, then why not try setting up your own club with friends and workmates and contact us for details of facilities available.
