It is always exciting when we are able to host large scale events and last weekend on the 8th July 2018 we were home to the England Korfball National Youth Day at The Hewett Academy.
The Hewett Academy is still one of our newer partners so for us to be able to host such an event was really exciting for both the on site team and the rest of Schools Plus. Michelle the Venue Manager had this to say about the event:
“The England Korfball National Junior Korfball Event at Hewett Academy was an amazing event to witness. There was inspiring team spirit but it wasn’t all about winning, the kids really had so much fun. With mixed boys and girls in a team, it was great to see such integration between the kids. The sport is a fabulous which is not widely known about but if you or your child have an interest in Netball or Basketball then it may be for you. Joe Skeet is the Chairman at Norffolk Korfball and along with other key partners, he ran a truly fantastic event from start to finish”
The day at Hewett Academy started at 10am with games being played right through to 5pm. With over 230 participants the games were split into five age groups; Under 9’s, Under 11’s, Under 13’s, Under 15’s and Under 17’s. Over 500 spectators came to support the children playing and to show their enthusiasm for the sport.
It was the perfect summer event with an on-site BBQ and ice creams. Schools Plus had a stand with balloons and lollies for everyone and showed support for the Korfballers!!
Michelle and her on site team assisted with the set up and take down of the day. Representing Schools Plus they kept check throughout the day to ensure the smooth running of the event for both the organisers, players and the spectators.
We are always pleased when an event like this is able to be so successful and we are welcoming the Norfolk Korfball Team to Hewett Academy for weekly sessions starting in September.
Are you unsure what Korfball is?
England Korfball describes the sport a fast-paced dynamic, controlled contact, mixed-gender team sport that originates from the Netherlands and is played in over 50 countries. It combines aspects of netball, basketball and handball forming it’s unique and inclusive game. The sport was invented in Holland in 1902 and it has become increasingly popular in recent years especially as a school sport and in Universities over the UK.
The court is split into 2 divisions by a centre line and teams compete to get the ball into the “Korf” which is basically a basket on a pole, 3.5m above the ground.
Korfball teams are made up of 4 females and 4 male players who all switch to play both attack and defence positions. They switch every two goals and this offers all players the opportunity to play varying positions learning the skills required for each and all get the opportunity to score. Like most sports a strong Korfball team thrive on communication and winning teams require fast movement and strong teamwork with every player adding value and getting involved.
