So, this weekend I was accused of being “very middle class”! Now it came from a ggod friend so I was able to take it on the chin but a part of me took umbrage with this and my gut reaction was to deny it. I said this to my friend…. “Hey, I take umbrage with that, why do you think I’m middle class?”
What followed made me smile as it’s all true and this was coming from a good friend who has taken a fair few ribbing from me in the past. He replied, “Well for a start who says ‘umbrage’ except the middle and upper classes?; your kids names (Rory, Freya and Imogen) are middle class; you buy way too much goats cheese and cous cous; you went to university; you drive a middle class car (VW Passat); you are always recommending restaurants; you work in middle management; and you buy more wine than beer!”
So perhaps I am ‘middle class’??? Well does class even exist in this day and age. Surely it’s all just in the perception of others? I doubt that many people who have come to live here from other EU countries even fully understand a class system that hasn’t really existed since the eighties.
For those of us who are old enough the above sketch is something that is as much an education of the class system as a parody on our lives.
Where does this lead to? Well I have been interviewing all week for new venue supervisors for my schools. When I looked through CV’s to select candidates I had to try and read between the lines a little. This is because what we do is so much about the person and their character as it is their work history. I’ve met some wonderful people this week from a broad range of backgrounds, education and even countries. So I must have done well with my CV sifting because I would love to employ them all at Schools Plus. In this situation though I will have a tough decision to make.
In what we do people are important, and being good with people is one of our key values that we look for. I think I have been very lucky this week because these candidates are all suitable. Apologies to those who I don’t have a post for!
